05 oktober Pachachmac-Lord of the World
We boarded a bus for the hour-long trip to the ruins of Pachachmac. Located in a valley south of Lima, Pachac‡mac is an extensive complex of adobe pyramids that originated in the year 200 A.D., pre-dating the Incas. A Quechua name roughly translated as "Lord of the World", Pachachmac was further developed by the Inca empire until the 15th century. For the Incas it served as both an important administrative center and as a religious shrine. We were able to view the main temples and pyramids, including amazingly intact ramps and stairways. At the top of the Temple of the Sun we had good views of the Pacific and of Villa El Salvador, a shantytown we will visit later in the term.
